This is great escapism that can immerses you in a different world, where everything is not as it seems. Highly recommended as entertaining reading. Oct 13, Melanie Hammond rated it it was amazing. From the moment I began reading, I was hooked. I love a story with a strong female lead, and I firmly believe that a woman should trust her instincts. I was amused by the peculiar turns-of-phrase the author used, such as "Its not all going to be beer and skittles.

I look forward to reading everything Gervase Shorter has to offer. Oct 14, Jackie Kunda rated it it was amazing. Books that grab me right from the beginning are my favorites, and this one definitely does that! The writing style is great, too. There isn't a lot of flowery prose, but it still conveys the images beautifully.

Not only did A Feeling in My Bones have a great hook, but the author is quite the wordsmith as well. He really has a knack for creating a setting that the reader can get lost in and leaves just enough detail to the imagination. Overall, I guess my only criticism would be the cover quality. I would definitely give it a try. Reviewed by Brittany for Book Sake. Oct 14, Susan rated it it was amazing.

I was glad that I was on vacation because I was able to begin the story on my plane ride, and then enjoy its end during one glorious poolside day. The cast of characters took me jet-setting across the globe in my minds eye. In my excitement, I caught myself rooting the main character on, out loud, while strangers looked on.

Shortly after Jakes d Time taken to read - 2 days Blurb From Goodreads Jake Forrester, is recruited by Harvey Baum, a Miami based business associate, to carry out an assignment for Cyrus Kroger, a reclusive billionaire, at his heavily guarded property in the Catskills. My review Sally is our main character, living a happy life with her husband Jake and their dog Waldo. Jakes career sees him doing different jobs and their income going from lavish and over the top to barely making ends meet but it always works out.

Jake's most recent deal falls through and it looks like they will have to sell their house just to get by when a once in a lifetime job offer comes in but it is top secret, even from Sally. Jake accepts and everything they know changes, including Jake and Sally knows that something just isn't right. The story itself jumps a fair bit, it starts with Sally on the run fearing for her life but quickly goes back to the beginning of how she and Jake met and everything mundane in between. It is very slow going and drawn out until chapter 6 when Jake disappears, I thought then that the story would turn into a whirlwind or intrigue and violence but it didn't.

Instead it goes along again slowly with Sally's day to day goings introducing us to her clients and their lives , her interactions with Jake or rather lack of them and how she tackles day to day life with their new life. Whilst I did enjoy this story and the twist a quarter of the way to the end is fabulous I never guessed for a minute , I like my crime books to have more speed and action. Sally annoyed me often rambling on about things I found rather bland and boring and some of her sayings irritated me, for example "Suddenly I had the embryo of a plan" and a few others of the like.

The author has brought her character to life really well, to me she came across as an older English lady who is somewhat pompous but still likable despite the stupidity of a lot of her actions. This is my first encounter with this author and I would like to thank them for the opportunity to read their work. Nov 24, Jackie rated it really liked it Shelves: Extended Description of Story via Smashwords. Sally and Jake start getting used to being extremely rich. My Thoughts This book was a minefield from the beginning, it was full of pitfalls and twists and turns that totally were too good to put down.

The drama and suspense are offset by characters you will find easy to understand and in the case of Jake's friend Harvey easy to dislike as well! The main character Sally Forrester is a no-nonsense forthright woman with a charming bounder of a husband who manages to finally sail his ship into port so to speak making the couples dreams of wealth a reality. The only problem is how did her husband Jake come by his money, was it by fowl means or fair? What happened to Jake for a month? Why is he no longer the warm, fun-loving, charming man she married?

The answer to these questions and more are found out over the course of her story, a story that takes the reader on a rather rambling madcap journey of almost a year where Sally tries to stay alive and culminating in a shocking ending that will change your mind about money being the end to all life's trials and troubles!

I highly recommend this read to those of us like me who like to travel in our armchairs, Sally and Jake will take you on a few journeys to places that are beautiful and also places most of us will never visit in our life time.

Dec 12, Sapphyria rated it really liked it. A totally gripping, on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller with an outcome that I never suspected until the lead character, Sally, did. When Sally's husband Jake gets involved with a reclusive, extremely wealthy man, they think their luck has finally turned around. Kroger has agreed to hire Jake and has him jet setting all over the world. Kroger in the Catskills, is then sent to Miami, and then, according to Sally, Jake just disappears.

Baum assures her that all is well; Cyrus Kroger just sent Jake to check on operations in Central Africa. When Jake finally resurfaces in the states, not only is Jake ill but Mr. Kroger has passed away. Jake has had a nervous breakdown and eventually Sally is allowed to fly to Miami to see him and then bring him home. Unfortunately, the man she picks up from the clinic is not the same man she married. Oh he looks the same and talks the same but their relationship stays at arms length.

A few weeks later it's revealed that Mr. Kroger revised his will shortly before his death and left everything to Jake and Sally. They are now extremely wealthy individuals. After Jake cruelly sells the home that Sally loves and she begins unpacking books for the new library, she finds something that turns up the suspicions shes been trying to keep on the back burner.

It is now that she starts piecing various clues together and what she finds certainly puts her life on the line.

There is a lot of background information provided throughout the book which made the book seem kind of wordy in parts but you get over that because of all the activity by the characters. The suspense and revelations made throughout the book kept me totally engaged and completely engulfed in Sally's life. The characters are all strong and the plot is solid. I can't divulge anything else about the book because I don't like providing spoilers if I can help it. I'll leave it at this: You won't be disappointed. Although there was enough going on in the pages, which all eventually leads up nicely to the main event, I really struggled with it and I can't put my finger on why because once I was halfway through it just got better and better with each page and I found myself wondering what my problem was with it. Sally is an editor in a publishing company while Jake is a 'consultant'.

He is hired to work for Cyrus T Kroger and has to travel to go through some tests to see whether he is suitable or not. Upon his return from Central Africa he suffers a nervous breakdown when he hears of the death of Cyrus and it never the same person because of it. We follow Sally as she narrates the events that lead up to this job and also what follows after. Through the ups and downs of losing money than having more than they know what to do with, and the struggles of marriage.

As I stated, halfway through the book I found myself completely engrossed in what was going on and could not put the book down. I had to finish it, I needed to know what would happen next. The twist in the story completely threw me and was something I never expected, but I love how it was played out and how everything fit into place and made sense. I was continually kept guessing on what was going to happen and I admire the author for managing to not only captivate me, but also keep me guessing right up to the last page. A Feeling In My Bones is a good read for people who like mystery and suspense.

Feb 03, Mason Canyon rated it it was amazing. Jake and Sally met at college and fell in love. The Forresters had a happy life of sorts living in England. Jake takes a job from a recluse billionaire named Kroger. While abroad on an assignment, Jake disappears. A month later Jake surfaces in a mental clinic in Miami, FL. Events from there drastically change the Jake and Sally met at college and fell in love. Kroger has died and just before he did, changed his will leaving everything to Jake and Sally.

While they should be enjoying the good life, Jake has changed. He is no longer the warm and loving man Sally married. The more she checks, the more she discovers she should have left things alone. This is an intriguing thriller that starts with Sally knowing too much. Author Gervase Shorter has a way of painting beautiful settings with his words.

While there are several side stories, they serve to give more depth to the characters and their actions. There are twists and turns throughout to keep you guessing until the end. This is a fast-pace read that will be hard to put down once you begin.

However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. Feb 02, Michael Somerscales rated it really liked it. The author has written this story in the first person as the character Sally, a book editor by profession, who has written a memorandum of her married life to her husband Jake, expressing her suspicions regarding his behavior, and the memo is intended to be submitted to the authorities should she not survive her ordeal. Mr Shorter writes in an easy journalistic style, with plenty of detailed color " A feeling in my Bones" is Gervase Shorter's third novel and my first reading of one of his books.

Mr Shorter writes in an easy journalistic style, with plenty of detailed color, including much on incidentals that don't always contribute to the momentum of the story. It is, nevertheless, a fascinating read precisely on account of the puzzle that the main characters' relationship should be so alienated and strange.

The absence of emotion between the two of them is reflected in her very matter-of-fact story telling, and so the lack of character development hardly matters. This is a Who Done It, not a Freudian melodrama. The reader simply MUST discover the explanation for their detachment from one another. That, indeed, turns out to be most surprising and highly original, and it's revelation is the true climax of the book, after which the storyline fades somewhat.

Gervase Shorter's background is from the world of finance, and I felt the most persuasive passages in his book are those dealing with money and corporate shenanigans.

It's not a pretty world and he shows it as such. It also struck me near the end of the book that here's the makings of a good drama. Rewritten in the third person I can see real Hollywood movie potential. All in all a very good effort. Three and three-quarter stars is my rating.
