So many of our favorite artists have a history in the region! We loved all of the places that we visited Standing at the sites where Van Gogh painted and lived were also moving. Chagall and Matisse and the Matisse Chapel touched our hearts! We also loved the cities, the food , our guide Penny, and the other travelers in our group!

We are already looking at where to take our next Road Scholar trip to! This program was well organized and informative, everything was excellent. Wished only if we had longer hours to stay at museums, especially at Chagall's and Matisse. This was a fabulous trip from all angles!

The Magic of Provence: Pleasures of Southern France by Yvonne Lenard

This program moves at a fast pace over some very rocky terrain. There are lots of tripping hazards so you'll have to keep your eyes open. The countryside is beautiful but you'll be on the bus a lot going from town to town. If you are seeking an introduction to Provence and southern France, this is the program for you. You will enjoy the amazing history, the architecture and colors, and the people and the way they live. I thought I wanted to go to Provence in the summer, but a French friend told me the French go in September, in time for the wine grape harvest and celebration.

The Best of the South of France fed our soul with beautiful scenery, amazing streetscapes and markets, inspiring art museums and shops and all with no worries because Road Scholar took care of the essential plans and provided a great group leader. This was a brief but spectacular tour of southern France. I recommend it highly. Excellent overall introduction to this fascinating region.

Covers a lot of ground and historical eras, but there is plenty of time to get to see where famous painters Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall worked and lived. This was a rare treat. The small group size allows easy access to the cozy oittle towns.

The Magic of Provence

Read the activity level guidelines carefully; there simply aren't wide, smooth, level sidewalks in this part of the world! If you are interested in art and artists, the beauty of southern France, exposure to cultural experiences, and delicious food, this program is a great choice! There is lots of great sightseeing in villages and the countryside. And, of course, museums are a real highlight of the tour. Meals were excellent, with one exception when the food was poorly prepared.

You'll be on the go most all day and there is a lot of walking and stair climbing, sometimes. You'll have plenty of free time, but not much down time at the end of the day.

The Magic Of Provence Pleasures Of Southern France

Our tour coordinator, Penny, was excellent! Excellent introductory tour to the South of France! The Best of Southern France was a superb travel experience. Penny was a great leader, and our little group of 10 were excellent travel companions. If you want to fully benefit from the experience, be prepared to walk.

I walked miles per day, about half of that on planned excursions and the rest during free time. If you are interested in Provence and the Cote D'Azur, particularly the art and artists of these areas, this tour is great. I liked the combination of time as a group and time apart. Enjoyed every moment of our time in Provence in a well-thought-out, well-led program.

The program was well organized. The other quests were friendly, interesting and well informed.

Peter Mayle's personal selection of the foods, customs and words he finds most fascinating, curious, delicious, or just plain fun. Though organized from A to Z, this is hardly a conventional work of reference. In more than entries, Peter Mayle—bestselling author of A Year in Provence—writes about subjects as wide-ranging as architecture and zingue-zingue-zoun in the local patois, a word meant to describe the sound of a violin. And, of course, he writes about food and drink: Provence A-Z is a delight for Peter Mayle's ever-growing audience and the perfect complement to any guidebook on Provence, or, for that matter, France.

A place apart, a land of outstanding beauty and distinction, Provence is nothing less than an earthly paradise. From one of the most famous coastlines in the world, the Cote d'Azur, to the hills and mountains of the Luberon, the variety and culture of its villages are astounding. It is in such small communities as those so beautifully photographed by Hugh Palmer that the true spirit of Provence is to be found.

Brilliant sunlight slants across jostling terra-cotta roofs, and great plane trees cast velvety shade across ancient squares where the only sound is that of a moss-covered fountain.

The Most Beautiful Villages of Provence stunningly evokes the beauty and spirit of Provence, which has drawn visitors to it from ancient times to the present day. Its enduring charm is here celebrated in Palmer's magnificent photographs of such gems as Riez and its fields of lavender or the mysterious cobbled paths of Crestet. These entrancing places, and many others, make this book a lasting tribute to a magical world. Featuring a special listing of hotels, restaurants, festivals, and markets, this book celebrates a part of the world that has entranced millions.
