The Real Robinson Crusoe
He took with him a little clothing, bedding, a musket and power, some tools, a Bible and tobacco. He resigned himself to a long stay and began to make island life habitable with only rats, goats and cats for company in his lonely vigil. Selkirk rushed to the shore, realising a little late that they were Spanish. Their landing party fired, forcing him to flee for his life although he managed to evade capture and the Spaniards eventually departed.
Finally On 1st of February , two British privateers dropped anchor offshore. Cast away on a desert island, surviving on what nature alone can provide, praying for rescue but at the same time fearing the sight of a boat on the horizon. But the story is believed to be based on the real-life experience of Scottish sailor Selkirk, marooned in on a small tropical island in the Pacific for more than four years, and now archaeological evidence has been found to support his existence on the island.
The Incredible Life Of Alexander Selkirk, The Real Robinson Crusoe
An article in the journal Post-Medieval Archaeology claims that an archaeological dig on the Argentinian island of Aguas Buenas, miles off the Chilean coast, reveals evidence of the campsite of an early European occupant. The most compelling evidence is the discovery of a fragment of a pair of navigational dividers which could only have belonged to a ship's master or navigator, which historical evidence suggests Selkirk must have been.

In Selkirk's rescuer, Captain Woodes Rogers' account of what he saw on arrival at Aguas Buenas in lists "some practical pieces" and mathematical instruments amongst the few possessions that Selkirk had taken with him from the ship. Dr David Caldwell, National Museums Scotland, who helped lead the dig, said the find finally confirmed the whereabouts of the castaway camp.
I never thought we had a chance of finding it but the discovery of the divider was crucial. These hostilities came to a head when the ship pulled into safety for a short time off the coast of an unknown and uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean. When it came time for the ship to resume its travels, Selkirk refused to leave, claiming that the ship would not survive the perils of the ocean. He demanded to be left on shore, under the assumption that the other men would follow his suit and rebel with him against Stradling. This assumption, however, proved false, and Stradling called his bluff.

Selkirk had a change of heart then, but, despite his pleading to be let back on the ship, Stradling would not allow him back on board. Instead, he left him abandoned on the island with only a scarce amount of provisions.
During that time, he survived by hunting lobster and crawfish, foraging for food, building fires and huts to provide shelter, and fashioning weapons and clothes. Even more difficult was dealing with the loneliness.
