He is an undervalued writer today, unfortunately. I was thrilled to watch it soon after my first reading of the trilogy. I do wish Penguin would resissue Hilda and These Twain. My old copies are okay, but the tan pages make it more of a challenge.
Sorry, I just looked at your copies again, and in fact all your copies illustrate the TV series on their covers. And I am relying on hardbacks more, because the print is sometimes too small , even in my beloved Penguins some but not all: Yes, especially if one has ageing eyes, as many do over I used to be able to read the tiniest type in dim light, but no more. I like Arnold Bennett. For me he is the English Zola, with all the Englishness that can imply.
I loved the Clayjhanger trilogy but have not read the fourth book yet. I liked These Twain better than you did. They were ill-suited in some ways; still, they got on, with the usual compromises. I recommend The Card, which I just finished and which is a comic novel, and Anna of the Five Towns, which is not comic at all.

Arnold could give us more than one mood and he knew his people and places thoroughly. Perhaps I would have liked These Twain more if I had not let a year go by between books! I love your idea of Bennett as the English Zola. I do have a copy of The Card which I found very cheap in a used bookstore.
Arnold Bennett: The Edwardian David Bowie?
These are such readable, fascinating novels. I can never remember plots, but I do remember that I liked them well enough to want to read more. You know how that goes! One day soon …..
