All of the translations are old, some from the 19th century, so the word-for-word translations are sometimes unclear or obscure. Still, you get a lot of sutras for your money, so it's a good value.

I wouldn't use this book for scholarly work, though. None of the sutras included are sutras attributed to the Buddha. The author completely left out the actual words of the Buddha who is credited for 6 or 7 sutras.

The sutras included are the most materialist sutras, ones that were written 5 to 15 centuries after the Buddha to please various Kings and empires. The ego materialism and lack of awareness of the author is not something that will help anyone. I highly recommend ignoring this book completely. Interesting read, as a religious text I believe it is important but as a feminist I find the sexism in patriarchal texts upsetting. Spiritual texts should be updated from archaic cultural values to include messages of love for all people, unfortunately no one wishes to correct holy texts. One person found this helpful.

I've been searching for a collection of well-known Sutras for some time and this collection is excellent. Not exactly a page-turner for reading, but so much rich information that comes to us in the present day from the past. I'm not a Buddhist myself, but I still find that there is considerable wisdom in the Sutras.
