Being in peace with his environment, the sudden arrival of Ellen, a student, is quite a disturbing event. Lars, who permitted her to visit and live with him during the dark and cold winter in the first place, soon is challenged by her attraction and also by her strict will only to gain experience. The relation between the two unalike persons - who don't even have a language in common - is stressed from the beginning, and when Ragnar, another trapper, comes over, the situation is about to change.

A young girl spends a winter with a trapper in a cold and dark Spitzbergen, in the far north km of the North Pole not many films are shot. Apr 02, Morgue Anne rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Anyone who's ever known anyone depressed, people considering or already in therapy. Rarely have I read a book that's touched me so much. Speaking from many years experience with strange and depressing books, that's not something I say lightly.

We start her tale with the exact ritual for her cutting, and fall head-first into her struggles in therapy. Although it is a "life story", this book is more about healing then reopening all the old, terrible wounds of past. I ha Rarely have I read a book that's touched me so much. I had to stop once every few pages to think about how these themes appeared in my life, and it came up in my own therapy sessions a few times.

I think the most touching moment was reading this book while cuddling with my boyfriend and having to stop and stare off into space for a few minutes. When I came back down to earth, my boyfriend had put his own book down and was looking at me with concern. The passage I had just read opened up a window of conversation and allowed me to say things about my depression that had otherwise gone unsaid, and let him understand what he could do to help. For that alone, I love this book. If you're looking through the never-ending line up of memoirs about depression, cutting, anorexia, etc, but want to read more about the light at the end of the tunnel as well as the tunnel itself , this is the book for you.

Jul 01, Melissa Lee-Tammeus rated it really liked it Shelves: I absolutely loved this book. I am a therapist and this comes from a client's perspective and her experience with seeking out counseling for cutting and an eating disorder. You get to be a fly on the wall for her sessions as well as her group work and really see her work through things - for anyone who is a counseling student or who loves keeping up on their education as an already practicing counselor and needs a bit of a refresher on technique, I say this is a great book to get.

Even if you ar I absolutely loved this book. Even if you are not a counselor or in the field, Ms. Vega, a well known award winning high school teacher, writes with raw honesty and true emotion about her shame and struggle to face her past and is worth a read by anyone interested in self improvement and awareness.

A true inspirations and a gutsy book.

You can't help but cheer for her throughout as well as cringe and hurt as she walks you through what cutting is really all about. Feb 15, Adrienne Urbanski rated it it was ok. This book has a promising story and compelling subject matter. However, Vanessa Vega uses mostly only dialogue from her therapy sessions and almost no description and setting. There is also, for the most part, no narrative aside from the therapy sessions.

I am surprised any editor would let a book be published like this. Vega's story is a good one, and her emotions seem genuine, but the way this is written makes it very hard to read this memoir let alone enjoy it. For a great memoir on self abus This book has a promising story and compelling subject matter. For a great memoir on self abuse I would suggest instead Bloodletting by Victoria Leatham. May 10, Liralen rated it it was ok Shelves: On the one hand I love that Vega does what very few books about mental health issues do, in that the book is structured primarily around recovery rather than around the deepest, worst moments of her issues.

Too many books focus so heavily on the 'bad' and then sum up the 'recovery' in a chapter or less, as though it's easily fixed. Vega structures her book around individual and group therapy, which means that for the vast majority of the book she's demonstrating the wor Mm Vega structures her book around individual and group therapy, which means that for the vast majority of the book she's demonstrating the work and so on that go into recovering from mental health problems.
