At the end of most stories about a sacred journey, the voyager returns with hard-earned wisdom and many gifts for his or her community. We may find ourselves in the same external circumstances where work and relationships are concerned but standing on different soil, seeing everything through new eyes. We are always forgetting, remembering, exploring, practicing, integrating, and then forgetting again. We develop more patience and empathy, more humor about our human fragility, and greater tolerance for the journey of finding our way back. That, after all, is life. Ask yourself what it means to you to remember who you are. What qualities do you consider to be a part of your soul self? Look at pictures of yourself as a child that reflect what you interpret to be your essential qualities. Describe what you see in your activities, body, or eyes that recalls these fundamental spirit qualities. Familiar childhood stories teach that we must leave home to find home; the happy ending requires us to heal ourselves and find our own internal truth.
Sleeping Beauty wakes up, Pinocchio becomes a real boy, and Dorothy returns to Kansas, discovering that what she sought was in the place she left.

Remember a journey you took in which you had to leave your outer life to discover a part of your inner self. Meditate on that journey. The late Angeles Arrien once told me about a Native American folk tale that claims each person is born into this world with a special song that is his or hers alone. My hope is that articles and books such as this; publications like mbg; and practices including yoga, meditation, and attempting to live and love in a complete, authentic way will guide us each to our unique song and will inspire us to bring its music into this world.

There are so many ways you can incorporate quick breathing exercises into your life, all day long. I often find myself doing breath work at traffic lights, in line at the grocery store and when my kids occasionally really push my buttons. I call it, "hitting the pause button. With consistent meditation you become less reactive and more responsive.

Here are a few simple ways to practice gratitude: As soon as you open your eyes in the morning, think of one thing you are grateful for. Maybe it is simply being alive, maybe it is the sun shining through your window, or for a loved one snuggled in bed with you. Keep a gratitude journal. We have a family journal that we keep on the kitchen table. We take turns at dinner saying what we are grateful for and writing them down. It is a great way to model for the kids to be appreciative of the big and little things in life.
It gets you out of the mental loop of focusing on what you feel is wrong with your life, or with the world, or what latest catastrophe was in the news that day. Cultivating gratitude isn't masochism: It's revealing the truth, which is that we have an incredible chance to live, to be conscious, to draw another breath, and to savor the life we have already lived in this brief moment of time we have to be alive in this strange corner of the universe.
This, right here, is one of the most profound keys to spiritual growth we have. Life comes at you fast. So fast that it is often literally impossible to control, and the more time we spend tying ourselves in knots trying to control it, the less we actually have control.

Life is a bewildering, exhilarating, often terrifying psychedelic trip. The secret is to let go.
That doesn't mean give up—it means to relax and understand that, at the end of the day, you have no control. Most people sleep eight hours a day, and if they have dreams, they probably forget them within a few minutes of waking.
2. Remembering is the key to most world religions and to spiritual experience.
You can, if you open up your sleeping life to active dreaming, which means better dream recall, and even lucid dreaming or controlling your own dreams. You can have access to a virtual reality better than anything that will ever be on the market, in which you can come to an incredible sense of radical self-understanding and self-awareness by exploring your own unconscious mind.
The first key to active dreaming, and using your dreams for your own spiritual growth, is simple: Write your dreams down in a dream journal every morning upon awakening. Even if you don't currently remember your dreams, this simple practice will change that. The more you write down your dreams, the more you will become aware of them—and in them.

Instead, you've got to take the hard road: Becoming laser-clear about who you truly are, and what you truly want for yourself, and then committing to fully becoming that, even if there's no safety net, even if it will bring the judgment of the people around you, even if it will take years or decades.
