The Motorgirl Memoirs: Adventures in Mania and Semi-Normality
A very in depth look at what mania can do to a person from someone who lives with it. A great human interest piece. While she ventures into territory that may be far from the experience of many readers, all can applaud the healing and self-acceptance that emerge through her journey. With deep honesty and humor, she explores her actions and feelings, both as viewed from the outside by an analytic narrator, then as experienced painfully through the prism of her mania, finally calling upon the power of her artistry to transform her story of love lost and found into poetry and song that can serve to inspire all of us who search for signs of hope in a troubled world.

One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. This nonfiction reads like a novel. You'll laugh, you'll cry. You'll get to know a lot about the author, who is a singer and a songwriter. She's got CDs out and her music is great.
Her manic highs are these crazy adventures. Leah-Carla Gordone has been through a lot, and lived to tell the tale. She's a wise soul who weaves her poetry and song lyrics into this tale that grips you and gives you a first-hand experience in what it's like to be so intensely artistic, yet bordering at times on the brink of madness.
And the ending--well, I won't give it away.

I took a break Friday night from my usual labors and grabbed your book off the shelf to stick my toe in its waters. I wasn't prepared and fell in completely!

You had me right from the table of contents. Your titles were so intriguing and enticing I just knew I was in for a ride to be remembered and boy oh boy wasn't that the truth. The stories themselves were mind blowing in their frankness and honesty. The whole work is a demonstration of the extremes of bipolar behavior and the complete absence of a proper safety net in our society. Your life on the edge provides a brutally honest look into the dichotomy of your bipolar world.
Your story telling is at once; beautiful and horrific, uplifting and depressing, moral and immoral, brave and timid. Traveling with you throughout the world and your mind is a vividly, visual, experience. Scenes from your life keep playing out in my mind over and over again. There are so many like the time your Poppy fed you strawberries and sugar cookies, Woodstock '94, the lunch you had with your parents in the cafeteria and of course, your wonderful ending.

It's hard to describe in words the impact of your words. After finishing many of these and resuming the storyline I often felt as though I was still reading a poem your words were so lyrical. I wanted to yell at your parents for not protecting you more and yet I couldn't help but rejoice in the freedom they provided you and how they were always there when it really mattered.
I cry for your mother. She was so strong. You have affected me profoundly with your book. A woman her searches for angels and soulmates sometimes from the depths of hell. Only to return always to a place of profound creativity and somehow, salvation. Her memoir never loses a kind of mystical wonder at life, humor, or an undeniable self-possession, even when it seems that all else is falling away See all 9 reviews. Most recent customer reviews.
