Quinton Blue (Author of The Sun Tea Chronicles)
As long as I consumed it pretty fast from the glass, it was drinkable, but it was a far cry from what I had enjoyed when I was growing up at S. Back then we had used loose tea, kept in a cannister along with the flour, coffee and sugar, steeped it in the pot of boiling hot water after taking it off the stove, and pouring the smoking aromatic outcome 10 or 15 minutes later through a little hand strainer through the open mouth of the pitcher over half a cup of sugar, and filling the rest of the pitcher with tap water before refrigerating it.
I had been doing okay with the tea bags in the years hence, more recently with the instant tea mixes. This summer I made it my life mission to consume the 95 bags of 3 year old Liptonite because I would not throw perfectly good tea away — correction — I would not throw imperfect tea bags past their prime away. The early drinking of Pot 4 was okay, but I discovered when I let the glass sit awhile, often until the ice melted, and drank the rest of it, the tea lost its good character — as though it had any character to begin with.

To counter the tartness, I was driven by necessity to break out the Lipton iced tea mix I had relegated to a far corner of the kitchen cupboard. When quaffed cold with fresh ice, the flavor seemed a little concentrated, but if I allowed the ice melt about half way, and stirred it, the intensity was perfect. Pouring and forgetting is how I drink most of my coffee too.
We'd love to see your creations on Instagram , Facebook , and Twitter. When hot summer days call for a cool-weather beverage, reach for some Catalina Citrus Sun Tea. Each sip leaves you quenched and refreshed. The citrus scents of orange and lemon that play against the full flavors of black tea and subtle notes of mint are captivating. For a fizzy note, combine equal parts tea and ginger ale.
Whatever your pleasure, go ahead and make this tea and let the sun work its magic.
