But it must be a sign of a very clever writer. I enjoyed the As a general rule I never read comedy because it's just not funny. I enjoyed the book and finished it in only a couple of sessions.

I can't say that I've become a convert to the genre, but I am a convert to Si Page and will be reading more of his work. Mar 19, Anne rated it really liked it. Even the less likeable characters were well written and truly believable within the carefully planned story that slowly weaves all of the different characters together. Si Page got the balance between full-on comedy and the touching sentiment and gentle friendships just right. If you want a good laugh whilst also seeing the best and worst of human nature, then definitely give this book a try.
Mar 08, Donna rated it it was amazing. Gretyl is as mad as a box of frogs, eccentric and so so funny. Not to mention frustratingly irritating. She gets through life by being rude and obnoxious yet she has an endearing side to her that comes out occasionally. Her long suffering husband Albert is the sweetest man who has remained by her side through thick and thin. I laughed and cried and laughed some more. It's so difficult to write a review without giving away the story.
I couldn't wait to read what antics she got up to next or what her daily choice of wig was.
If you like something a little bit different, funny, witty yet heartwarming and sweet then you need Gretyl in your life. So looking forward to the sequel. Mar 10, Timea rated it really liked it. What a brilliantly funny book this is! I read it in a day and really enjoyed the antics of the characters. It had me laughing out loud many times, especially when I tried to imagine Gretyl as a Stepford wife in Poncey Bridge. Feb 23, Selina Trafford rated it it was amazing. Gretyl is a tour de force he hilarious antics will make you laugh, cringe antics and maybe even cry.
At the start of the book you really dislike her but then as the story progresses you kind of learn to appreciate her outlook and joy do vie. The story is about a cantankerous old lady gretyl who bullies her way through life, her poor husband banishes himself for much of the to his allotment shed where he dreams of days and friends long past.
It all comes to a head when Gretyl inherits a house and Gretyl is a tour de force he hilarious antics will make you laugh, cringe antics and maybe even cry. It all comes to a head when Gretyl inherits a house and lots of money and her husbands best pal sadly passes away. They are both forced to re-evaluate thier lives and after some hilarious adventures including leg wax, a hit man, some accidental drug taking it comes right in the end.
I loves this book and really hope there's a sequel Audio book review A fun story that comes to life with this narrator. It has thoughtful moments. Gretyls husband usually being the one who brings those moments about. Not Gretyl herself, who is a rather annoying and irritating! All part of the story mind! To me this is an updated fun book with a reminder of Tom Sharpe back in the day. Def worth listening to or reading.

I'm going to make an admission now, when I read the reviews for Missing Gretyl I was put slightly on edge with one citing the fact it contained domestic violence as the reason they couldn't carry on reading it, having suffered through such a period in my life I am often left cringing when I see someone make light of such a situation.
Having spoken to Si over a period of a couple of months after winning the book, it was glaringly obvious to Also posted at: Having spoken to Si over a period of a couple of months after winning the book, it was glaringly obvious to me that his intentions for the book were to make people laugh, take the warped English sense of humour and put it down on a page, so it was with an open mind and soon to be discovered heart I opened up Missing Gretyl.
Missing Gretyl is full of colourful characters each at first wrapped up in themselves, what they can get and in some cases whom they can scam next - Gretyl herself reminds me of a larger than life version of a women we all know - the one that's quite kooky perhaps a little insane, with her love for wigs, frogs and getting a right good bargain, she's perhaps the women you cross the street for when you see them coming.
Gretyl lives with her long suffering husband Albert on the 12th floor of a high rise in London and he often dreams of a life without her, how 'doing her in' in the silliest of ways head in the toilet and a couple of flushes might just be what he craves - but when he thinks she really might be gone, is there any way that losing his long time love would really be a good thing?
The Soddall family live in a council house and while Sharon wants out, Dave is a bit of a couch potato, but together with their son, Dave's brother and an old family friend they come up with the scam of a life time - one that will will have the rich folk of Poncy Bridge just chomping at the bit to throw in some of their fortunes. But how do the two families meet, how does Gretyl end up in Poncy Bridge and just why is there a hitman called Arti Chokes involved in it all? Well to found out those answers you're just have to read the book, a book which had me crying with laughing, sympathetically crying with pain and at the end well that would just be giving a little too much away - no one wants to know the end before they start right?

Albert is the long suffering husband of battleaxe Gretyl and this comedy novel tells all about their odd little marriage whilst also focusing on a number of different characters too. There are sad moments, laugh out loud moments, aww moments and moments that will shock you. We all know a woman like Gretyl.
She can only be described as a battleaxe - that woman that those shop assistants really don't want to serve, that the hairdressers Missing Gretyl tells the story of Albert and Gretyl Trollop. She can only be described as a battleaxe - that woman that those shop assistants really don't want to serve, that the hairdressers don't want to work on and the people at the car boot cringe at seeing. A woman who thinks she knows everything and thinks she is the cream of the crop - when she looks more like a dogs dinner.
Simon has written her so vividly that I can almost imagine her walking down the street in my village - a cross between Nora Batty, Bet Lynch and a few others!

Gretyl has always believed that there is more to life than her and Albert's pokey little flat in London - and it seems as if her prayers are answered when a long lost relative dies and she finds out she has quite a substantial inheritance. Moving to her new abode, she soon finds out that she isn't quite the type of person they want in their close knit area - and some will stop at nothing to be rid of her.
Add in the Soddalls with their madcap scheme to con some rich old idiots out of their money and you have a novel that is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. With such rich, vivid characters and a tale that can make you laugh and cry, I would recommend this novel to anyone. I'm eagerly awaiting Simon's next work and I've been lucky enough to get a sneak peek of his latest work in progress - we're all in for a treat by what I've seen! If you like a book that has you still thinking about it a few weeks after you've finished it, then this is for you.
I'm sure you won't be disappointed! Sep 14, Lesley Keddy rated it it was amazing Shelves: Such a funny book. Gretyl and Albert have been married for years and have settled into their own rhythm. Gretyl loves frog ornaments, wigs and tat in general. Loves a bit of goss and car boot sales. Albert loves his allotment, reminiscing about the war years and enjoying a pint and a flutter at the bookies with his mate Stan. Soon their Such a funny book. Soon their lives all merge and everyone's lives are indeed changed forever.
Nov 02, Susan Hampson rated it it was amazing. An absolute treasure of a comedy read. The first few chapters of the book were little stories about Gretyl Trollop which quickly established her character. A lady a term used here with tongue in cheek who thinks of herself as a relative of royal descendant from somewhere in her past and acts accordingly.
She expects the best treatment from everyone, taxi drivers, the hair dressers and of course her long suffering husband Albert. Albert takes everything in his stride but escapes to his beloved An absolute treasure of a comedy read. Albert takes everything in his stride but escapes to his beloved allotment as much as he can.
Missing Gretyl - You Only Love Twice by Si Page
Gretyl with all her snooty behavior still seeks her bargains each week among the car boot traders, which is very funny. She has a love of wigs which are changed each day of the week and the purchase of a new wig and subsequent visit to the hairdressers did make me giggle. Once Gretryl's character has been set the main story begins and what adventure this is.
I took a while to warm to this lady, she is the one that you just don't make eye contact with in real life, just keep your head down and motor on. The Siddal family become big players in the book, the Del boys of this world. Sharon Siddal and Gretyl make a brilliant twosome never to be forgotten especially when they go to Marbella but I don't want to give away this gem of a story.
Just to say the hair waxing makes my eyes water even now. This is a well planned story, it had me giggling and laughing but also had its sad moments. There is a bit of a morale to this story too about not taking the people with love for granted and we can change and make a difference. Loved the book and will buy the sequel when it comes out. A joy of a read to brighten your day There are no discussion topics on this book yet.

After attending three different senior schools, Si decided that it was a waste of time turning up for his GCE exams and bunked off to head for the workplace as a carpet fitter where he found the YTS scheme waiting with no more than twenty-something quid a week and a clip round the ear for cutting carpet 'very wonky'. Si describes the next ten years of his working life in grim fashion: Theology Degree somewhere outside of Essex, in a strange land called 'The North'. Things were reportedly so bad 'oop North', that Si expected to be living among whippet-racing peasants dressed in shell suits, living off a diet of mushy peas.
Witness the antics of this 'old timer' Gretyl Trollop, her long-suffering husband, Albert, the Soddall family who have 'sod all' and other great characters in this hilarious comedy novel. Married for over fifty years, it's all trouble and strife for the Trollops. They live in a high-rise tower block in London's East End, where there isn't enough room to swing a cat. Gretyl is glued to the TV shopping channels and addicted to car boot sales. Albert finds respite in his allotment and the local bookmakers. They carry on with their separate lives until a mysterious letter threatens to change everything and turn Albert's world upside down.
Add to the chaotic mix a removal van, a hitman, a holiday scam and a murderous plan, and you will discover the hilarious and touching world that is, Missing Gretyl. Can Gretyl play the fraudsters at their own game? Will she survive the murderous attempts of Arti Chokes? Does Albert end up missing Gretyl? Although, at times I couldn't help just laughing at her.
Don't even get me started on the Soddalls. They were so deliciously dysfunctional and downright dodgy as they hatch their latest get rich quick scheme..
Throw in the residents of Poncey Bridge with their militant "get orf my land" attitude and we get three elements to this story and it's fascinating watching how they all start to converge, In Marbella of all places! It's quite a visual book. I am not a visual reader to be honest so it does take a good author to get me to "see the action" play out in front of me.
Although, in this case, with some of the scenes being played out, I rather wish he hadn't! It was also a very vocal book. Got a bit emotionally involved at times I think!
Missing Gretyl - You Only Love Twice
Only cos they did rather wind me up at times. As well as the comedy element, we also have a bit of tragedy thrown in for good measure courtesy of Albert. His relationships with his old and young friend were, at times, very touching and made for a nice balance against the slapstick comedy elements. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this rollicking ride, definitely worth reading through my initial discomfort. I must pop the author's other book No Idea on my tbr.
